Charcoal or gas? Which is the best?

The debate between Charcoal vs Gas is one as old as time. There are a whole range of different BBQ options on the market, but which of these options is the best for you? We’re here to tell you straight. Read on to find out!

Charcoal:

Purists will tell you that charcoal is the only way to go for grilling. Charcoal grills certainly give off the best flavour when compared to gas cooked meat, you get that charred smokiness that you just can’t get from gas grills. With charcoal grills, you also have the benefit of cooking with both indirect and direct heat. You can hot sear fast with direct flames, or slow cook large cuts of meat to perfection with indirect heat.

That being said, there are some negative aspects to charcoal grills. Charcoal grills tend to be more restrictive in size, this along with a longer start up time means that you probably won’t be able to get as much meat cooked as you would with a gas grill, so charcoal grills may not be the best bet if you are looking to cook for a large number of guests. It takes practice to perfect cooking with charcoal, but if you have the intuition you’ll be set in no time.

Gas:

With gas BBQs, you get the convenience of less clean up (as there will be no charcoal residue for you to wash out). It’s easier to get consistent results with a gas grill as you can easily adjust the temperature and require very little maintenance on your part. Gas grills also take less time to heat up, so if you’re hosting a large gathering and need to cater to a lot of people gas might be the best bet.

Some cons for gas grills are that you sacrifice portability, there are travel sized grills available but it’s probably better to just get a small charcoal one instead. You also have to be extra careful around safety with gas grills, make sure your propane tank is attached properly and thoroughly away from your house.

So, what’s the play?

In conclusion, the choice between gas and charcoal grills really depends on individual preference. If you are going for convenience and simply want to cook for a big crowd, choose a gas grill. A solid gas grill will last you a long time and get you consistent results. However, if you want to go all in on flavour charcoal is the only way to go. We prefer the charred taste you get when you slow cook meat.
